Why James Gunn's Dark Superman Movie 'Brightburn' Was Quickly Forgotten

We should all be happy for James Gunn. It only took him two tries to get Superman right. At this point, 2019’s Brightburn feels like his dirty little secret. Released on May 24, 2019, the movie follows a young boy named Brandon Breyer, who discovers that he has a number of superpowers on his 12th birthday, including super-strength, the ability to fly, and heat vision. But Breyer does not follow in the footsteps of DC’s most iconic superhero. Instead, the boy goes on a killing rampage — the victims being his adoptive mother, father, uncle, and a couple of cops. Then he attempts to destroy the entire world. As you can probably tell, the movie was edgy to the extreme in its attempt to make an evil Superman. But even with a post-credits scene that teased an evil form of the Justice League, Brightburn went up, up... and, well, away.
