Young Fathers have written the score for ’28 Years Later’

Young Fathers have announced that they have scored 28 Years Later.
The post-apocalyptic horror film, written and directed by Danny Boyle, is due for release in cinemas on June 20. Following on from 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007), the forthcoming sequel stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes.
Taking to social media this week, Scottish prog hip-hop outfit Young Fathers revealed that they had provided the score for the new movie.
“28 Years Later. Directed By Danny Boyle. Written by Alex Garland. Music by Young Fathers,” they wrote alongside the official film poster. You can see the post below.
As Film Music Reporter notes, Icelandic musician and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir (Joker, Joker: Folie à Deux, Chernobyl) had previously been slated to score 28 Years Later and its upcoming sequel, The Bone Temple.
Back in 2017, Young Fathers contributed to the soundtrack for Boyle’s T2 Trainspotting.
Speaking about his collaboration with the Mercury-winning band, the filmmaker explained: “You’re always looking for the heartbeat of a film. For Trainspotting, it was Underworld’s ‘Born Slippy’. For T2, it’s Young Fathers.
“Their songs are my heartbeat for the film. And ‘Only God Knows’ is that rush again. The ocean. The heart.”
An official synopsis of the 28 Years Later reads: “It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped from a biological weapons laboratory. Still living in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amid the infected.
“One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily defended causeway. When one of them decides to venture into the dark heart of the mainland, he soon discovers a mutation that has spread to not only the infected, but other survivors as well.”
Last month, fans shared their excitement and reaction to the latest trailer for the film. You can watch it above.
Boyle returns to the director’s chair after Juan Carlos Fresnadillo took over the role for 28 Weeks Later. Garland is also back as writer, having penned the original movie 28 Days Later.
Meanwhile, Boyle recently revealed that original star Cillian Murphy would be appearing at some point in the planned 28 Years Later trilogy. “Like all good things in life, you may have to wait a little while for him to make his appearance,” he teased.
Last December, the first 28 Years Later trailer became the most-watched horror trailer of 2024, and the second most-watched of all time.
Young Fathers released their fourth and most recent studio LP, ‘Heavy Heavy’, in 2023. The record was shortlisted for the 2023 Mercury Prize, won the Scottish Album Of The Year award (the band’s third overall), and was nominated for Album Of The Year at the BRITs.
In late 2023, the group teamed up with Fontaines D.C. and Massive Attack on a limited-edition Gaza benefit vinyl.
The following year, Young Fathers spoke to NME about what’s next following the success of ‘Heavy Heavy’, saying: “We’ll just ride the wave, then get back in the studio and do it all again.” Watch the interview in full above.
