Fred West was charged with the murders of twelve young women, with the majority being with his second wife Rose, who was later convicted of 10 murders. Among the victims were their own daughter, Heather, and Fred’s eight-year-old step-daughter, Charmaine. Rose West continues to plead her innocence 30 years later.
Fred And Rose West: A British Horror Story was released on Netflix on May 14, 2025.
What happened to Fred West?
Just weeks before he was set to stand trial for the murders of 12 young women, Fred West was found dead, aged 53, in his remand prison cell on January 1, 1995.
He left a suicide note addressed to his wife Rose, which read: “I haven’t got you a present, but all I have is my life. I will give it to you, my darling. When you are ready, come to me. I will be waiting for you.”
Following his death, Rose West was left to stand trial alone for her crimes.
What happened to Rose West?

Rose West was sentenced to life in prison in November 1995 at Winchester Crown Court for the murder of 10 young girls and women. She has appealed several times to overturn the conviction, maintaining her innocence to this day, but these were all rejected.
In a statement in 2001 (via the BBC), Rose said she dropped her plans to appeal because she believed she would never be free, even if she were released.
She also apologised to her daughter Ann Marie for the abuse she suffered, adding: “Despite everything, I should like at some stage to apologise to Ann Marie. Ann Marie is part of my family and I would love to be reconciled to her and have contact with her.”
At the time of writing, Rose, now aged 71, is incarcerated at HMP New Hall women’s prison in Flockton, West Yorkshire.
