‘Baldur’s Gate 3’ boss teases “fun” and “surprising” new game

Swen Vincke, the CEO of Baldur’s Gate 3 developers Larian Studios, has teased the studio’s “fun” and “surprising” new game.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was originally released in August 2023 and despite massive success, Larian Studios went on to confirm that they wouldn’t be working on a DLC or a sequel.“We’re not going to make [what] everybody is expecting. We’re going to move on,” explained Vincke.

Larian hasn’t revealed much about what comes next, but has teased two new projects that will be “even better” than Baldur’s Gate 3, with the “very ambitious” RPGs based on fresh IPs. As part of their Christmas countdown, Vincke teased a “big” game that needs “a lot more time in the oven”.

However, to celebrate two years since Baldur’s Gate 3 was released, Vincke took to X to reveal a bit more about their next game. “Crazy to think it’s only been two years. It’s truly been life changing. Probably worth writing about one day but I can spoil the biggest takeaway [now]. Baldur’s Gate 3 was what allowed us to do our next crazy thing,“ he said.

“How that will pan out is anyone’s guess but I can assure you we’re working hard to ensure you’ll have plenty of fun. Like really – loads of it. In a surprising way,” he continued. “And I can’t wait to show you. But you’ll need to be patient [because] we’ll need a bit of time to make it all work. It’ll be worth it though.”

The final major update for Baldur’s Gate 3 was released in April and was swiftly followed by fans praising the “masterpiece” action-adventure game. “It has deserved every bit of praise and every award. Truly a perfect example of how to make a game! I am looking forward to whatever Larian make next,” wrote one fan.

“You helped us make Baldur’s Gate 3 a bigger success than we could’ve ever hoped for, and that passion could keep us tweaking things and making changes until the end of time. But then we’d never be able to create something new,” Larian said in a statement at the time.

This isn’t the end of Baldur’s Gate though as Wizards Of The Coast, who owns the Dungeons & Dragons-inspired Baldur’s Gate IP, have confirmed it will continue the series. “The bar has been set very high, and it’s our job to reach and surpass that bar.”

In other news, Hollow Knight: Silksong fans are convinced the upcoming Nintendo Indie World Showcase will have news about the release date of the long-awaited sequel.
