Murder in a Small Town Season 2 EWK: New Casting, Spoilers, Premiere Date, and Everything We Know

What’s next for FOX’s blue-sky procedural?
Cozy blue-sky procedurals are making a comeback, so we’re thrilled to return to Gibsons for another dose of romance and mystery in Murder in a Small Town.
The FOX series follows Det. Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland) as he adjusts to coastal living and notices all the bodies and secrets that turn up near the shoreline.
It was one of the few series that nurtured the core romance as much as it showcased the weekly cases, and the series introduced Karl and Cassandra’s (Kristin Kreuk) relationship almost immediately.
We were thrilled when Murder in a Small Town was renewed because we wanted to see more of their relationship and see them grow as individuals.
Many fans were intrigued by the arcs that began in the Season 1 finale, and it’s time to discuss what’s next. Who’s returning, and who’s new to Gibsons, and how will that impact the community? What storylines will we see in Season 2?
How Did Murder in a Small Town Season 1 End?
The final murder of the series involved a violent serial killer, who relished in painting his victims.
Karl realized it was the local art teacher, Tommy Cummins, after viewing his work and fearing for Devon, Holly’s best friend.
Karl was put in an awful position between having to choose between his job and his daughter, but luckily, his team arrived in time to help.
That case reinforced that his loved ones mattered more than his job, so we can’t wait to see him balance both in Season 2.
Murder in a Small Town Season 1 Episode 8 ended with Karl and Cassandra reconciling, and we were thrilled since the series wasn’t the same with them apart. We needed to see more of their relationship.
While Murder in a Small Town Season 1 did not end on a cliffhanger, it opened several doors for possible storylines.
These included Cassandra’s political storyline, Isabella’s application to law school, and Sid’s possible retirement.
There were enough open-ended arcs that viewers wanted more.
Has Murder in a Small Town Been Renewed?
Murder in a Small Town was renewed for a second season back in January, only two months after the Season 1 finale.
While the series wasn’t a massive hit, it had a steady audience, and the ratings increased with the daily +7 ratings when viewers had the opportunity to find it on streaming.
Murder in a Small Town also benefited from having a lower price tag and being a co-production with Canada’s Sepia and Future Shack.
Canada has created several lighthearted procedurals that thrive in the United States, and we’re excited to see more of Karl and Cassandra working together to solve crime.
Murder in a Small Town Season 2 has ten episodes, two more than its first season.
When Will Murder in a Small Town Season 2 Premiere?
Murder in a Small Town Season 2 will premiere on Tuesday, September 23, at 8/7c on FOX. Doc will follow it, and it is FOX’s only scripted night of primetime television.
Episodes will be available the next day on Hulu.
Murder in a Small Town Season 2 Cast
Returning Cast
Currently, we expect most of the main cast to return, including:
Rossif Sutherland as Det. Karl Alberg – The new chief of police who escaped to Gibsons, hoping for respite, but found more murderous secrets and a romance with Cassandra
Kristin Kreuk as Cassandra Lee – Karl’s love interest and Gibson’s head librarian, who longs to make a difference in the community by running for councilwoman.
Aaron Douglas as Sergeant Sid Sokolowski – Karl’s second-in-command, who would do anything for him, but has hinted at retirement.
Mya Lowe as Corporal Edwina Yen – The steady detective who strived hard to prove her worth.
Savonna Spracklin as Isabella Harbud – The police station’s receptionist, who always knows everything and plans to attend law school.
Fritzy-Klevans Destine as Constable Andy Kendrick – The charming new detective who often messed up until the time he saved Karl’s life.
Dakota Guppy as Holly Alberg – Karl’s teen daughter, whose new storyline will address more family history.
New Additions
Murder in a Small Town Season 1 generally focused on the main cast and the guest stars of the week, except for a few townspeople.
While we appreciated the tight cast, it lacked the close-knit small-town vibe, and adding these new characters may help with altering that effect.
Variety recently reported that Marcia Gay Harden (So Help Me Todd) is joining Murder in a Small Town Season 2 in a series regular role.
She’ll play Mayor Christie Holman, who is a caring doctor, but also a political figure who wants to help Gibsons. She sometimes thinks of her interests first, which may clash with those of Cassandra and Karl.
Three other actors have also joined the series.
Bethany Brown (The Good Doctor) will play Corporal Laila Jackson. She’s an old colleague of Detective Alberg, who appears capable, witty, and charming.
She’s been there a few months, which hints at a time jump from the finale.
Corporal Jackson has established herself as a valuable team player, but a case and understaffing will overwhelm her, and she’ll turn to her old demons, likely alcohol.
Marci T. House (iZombie) joins as Angela Clyburn, the new medical examiner, who works tirelessly. She’s unsure what to think of Karl until his integrity wins her over.
Joshua Close (Fargo) portrays Todd, a homeless man who appears scary, but actually loves books and spending time at the library.
He ends up in a violent confrontation, leading the police to wonder if he was connected to a crime.
Murder in a Small Town Season 2 Plot Possibilities: What’s Ahead?
FOX recently released a synopsis for Murder in a Small Town Season 2, and while some episodes may feature weekly cases, it sounds like Karl has a bigger problem and a longer mystery.
Karl’s responsibilities expand. His jurisdiction expands, leaving him with more cases and limited resources.
Some of the cases include finding a body at a local wedding between two feuding families and a double kidnapping that becomes a bigger crime.
He must call on his team and Cassandra to assist him in solving these dangerous crimes in their quiet town.
Dive more into Karl’s backstory and his mom’s artwork. Throughout Murder in a Small Town Season 1, Karl’s fascination with art, especially his mom’s, popped up a few times.
That may play a bigger part in the second season and involve his daughter, Holly, too.
We love that because she often seemed left out last season, and it would be an ideal way to explore the family history and integrate her into the show more.
Explain why Cassandra returned to Gibsons and why she’s passionate about the town. We have not addressed why Cassandra returned to Gibsons. It was likely because her mom was ill, but the series needs to introduce her to help us understand those family dynamics.
Cassandra felt frustrated when she couldn’t earn enough money for the art department, and that’s part of the reason why she’s running for councilwoman, but not the only reason.
Like Karl, Gibsons is special to her, and she hates the increasing crime rate, but will her proposed changes help or hurt their relationship?
Watch Karl and Cassandra’s relationship evolve. While Karl and Cassandra kissed and made up in the Murder in a Small Town Season 1 finale, they both have a past.
While they’re committed to one another, they’re prone to speaking their minds, and that could get worse when Cassandra runs for the councilwoman position.
Some things may align with Karl’s view, but others won’t, and the new mayor will complicate things even further.
Murder in a Small Town Season 2 will focus more on learning to deal with their differences and working together, rather than doubting their feelings for each other.
Build the supporting characters. EP Jeff Wachtel spoke about how much he loved the supporting cast and building their characters.
He planned to pursue Isabella’s dream to attend law school and build her friendship with Corporal Yen.
It sounds like maybe both Corporal Yen and the new corporal may deal with some personal issues with being overworked and facing old demons. That would be interesting.
We haven’t heard much about Sergeant Sid yet, but Karl will need him if his jurisdiction has expanded. Those two make a dynamic duo.
Since Karl’s team is expanding, I suspect Wachtel will develop all of the supporting characters, so viewers will tune in and invest in them as much as Karl and Cassandra’s romance.
Stay Tuned
Murder in a Small Town started filming in March. The series actually films in Gibsons, meaning fans often recognize landmark locations, such as Molly’s Reach Cafe or Gibsons Public Library, where Cassandra works.
Since FOX only has one night of scripted television and Murder in a Small Town keeps releasing new casting info, it’s become one of the fall’s anticipated returns.
Check back often since we will update this post with new details, including more casting info and a Season 2 trailer.
Until then, what would you like to see in Murder in a Small Town Season 2? Do you want more backstories on Sergeant Sid and Corporal Yen? More romance for Karl and Cassandra? Would you prefer weekly cases or a season-long mystery?
