Beck is working on an orchestral album

Beck has revealed he is working on an orchestral album.

In a new interview with Wallpaper, the musician discussed his recent orchestral shows held at London’s Royal Albert Hall earlier this month. During his two night residency on April 19 and 20, he played a series of deep cuts from his back catalogue, along with hits like his cover of the Korgis’ ‘Everybody’s Got To Learn Sometimes’.

Due to the recent Royal Albert Hall shows and his upcoming North American orchestral tour, there’s been speculation that Beck might make an orchestral turn with his next album. That appears to be the case according to Wallpaper‘s article, which reveals Beck has been in the studio with an orchestra.

However, they noted that it will not be a follow up to his last album, 2019’s ‘Hyperspace’, which NME called a “daring new era” in a four-star review. Instead, Beck considers it an “undisclosed, unnamed project”.

Beck will continue to play orchestral renditions of his songs in his North American tour from July this year. Kicking off in New Haven, Conneticut, Beck will travel through Toronto, Cincinnati, Chicago and more, rounding off his tour with a show in San Diego.

We last spoke to Beck back in 2019 for our Big Read, where the musician discussed whether the 1990s were the “golden age” for guitar music.

“I kept hearing that rock was over and about to end, so I was bracing for getting my keyboards out,” he told us. “I was making electronic music and I thought ‘now is going to be the time’, and then garage-rock bands like The White Stripes and The Strokes would come along and it became ‘guitars, guitars, guitars’.

“I’ve never quite gone all-in in one area. I’ve always been in the margin of what’s happening and on my own continuum,” he continued. “I don’t know if you could call it a ‘golden’ time, it was a mellow golden time. It was more like tarnished brass.”

In other news, Beck has shared an atmospheric cover of the classic George Harrison track ‘Be Here Now’.
