Chappell Roan has revealed that her second album “doesn’t exist yet”, and may not be ready for another “five years”.

The pop star and former NME Cover star opened up about the hopes for a new album during a recent interview with Vogue, where she clarified that the follow-up to 2023’s hit debut ‘The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess’ may still be a while off yet.

“The second project doesn’t exist yet,” she told the outlet. “There is no album. There is no collection of songs.”

Comparing it to the process for ‘The Rise And Fall…”, Roan added: “It took me five years to write the first one, and it’s probably going to take at least five to write the next. I’m not that type of writer that can pump it out.

“I don’t think I make good music whenever I force myself to do anything. I see some comments sometimes, like, ‘She’s everywhere except that damn studio.’ Even if I was in the studio 12 hours a day, every single day, that does not mean that you would get an album any faster.”

With her first LP, the US singer raced up festival bills with hits including ‘Pink Pony Club’ and ‘HOT TO GO!’, and earned her first UK Number One album with the project almost a year after its release.

She then followed it up in 2024 with the hit song ‘Good Luck, Babe!’, and later with the “full ass country song” ‘The Giver’. Her latest standalone track arrived last week in the form of the highly anticipated single ‘The Subway’.

Elsewhere in the Vogue interview, the singer reaffirmed that she will not be letting social media play any role in her writing process for a new album. Explaining that she only goes on Instagram to post before quickly deleting the app from her phone, she said: “Socials harm the fuck out of me and my art. I’m not doing that to myself anymore.”

Roan added: “I’ve never written an album where I don’t have Instagram or anything. The album process is purely, only mine. No one on TikTok gets to see it.”

While ‘The Rise And Fall…’ saw Roan top the charts and make her way up the rankings on festival bills, her follow-up singles have been a huge success too. ‘Good Luck Babe!’ went on to be crowned NME‘s Song of 2024, and she also got multiple nods at the Grammys for the song.

‘The Rise And Fall…’ was nominated for Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album, while ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ was up for Song Of The Year, Record Of The Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. She would go home to take the trophy in the Best New Artist category.

Back in March, Roan said that she was “so beyond far away from” her second album, adding that she “could not even tell you” when it would come out.

Then, in June, she announced a series of “pop-up” US shows for this autumn that will take place “before going away to write [her] next album”.

The former NME Cover star is due to headline Reading & Leeds 2025 this month. These shows will be held on August 22 and 23 respectively, and see her top this year’s bill alongside Travis Scott, Bring Me The Horizon and Hozier.

After Reading & Leeds, she’ll play two shows for the Summer Sessions concert series at the Royal Highlands Showgrounds in Edinburgh, and appear at Electric Picnic in Ireland. Visit here for tickets.
