Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the first release from independent studio Sandfall Interactive. The action role-playing game launched in April and sold more than 2million units in its first 12 days. It remains one of the best-reviewed games of 2025.
Set on the fictional island of Lumière, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 follows a rag-tag group of heroes as they try and stop the terrifying entity known as the Paintress who, every year, writes a number down and causes everyone of that age, or older, to disappear forever.
In a new interview with YouTuber MrMattyPlays, creator Guillaume Broche revealed that Clair Obscur is the “franchise name,” and Expedition 33 is just “one of the stories that we want to tell in this franchise.”
“Exactly what [the sequel] will look like and what the concept will be is still too soon to announce, but what is sure is that this is not the end of the Clair Obscur franchise,” he continued.
Elsewhere in the chat, he responded to rumours about an expansion for Expedition 33. “There may be [but] it’s a bit too early to say,” he teased. “We may be cooking.”
Back in May, writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen told a fan that the chances of DLC were “good” even though the studio had “nothing concrete” planned. “We’ve always said if there is strong desire from the players that we would love to do something more.” She later claimed those comments were taken out of context. However in June, Sandfall confirmed “new content” was on the way but couldn’t confirm what or when.
A film adaptation of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is already in the works from Story Kitchen (Sonic The Hedgehog, Tomb Raider). “The game’s compelling narrative and complex characters provide a solid foundation for a cinematic experience that will resonate with both gamers and moviegoers alike,” said the studio in a statement.
“Partnering with Story Kitchen allows us to expand the universe of Clair Obscur beyond the gaming realm,” added Broche. “Their expertise in storytelling and passion for our vision make them the perfect team to translate our game into a captivating film.”
In other news, Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima has revealed that he won’t be making the follow-up to this year’s blockbuster hit Death Stranding 2 – but hopes someone else will.
