Doc Season 2’s Thrilling Trailer Promises That Amy’s Best Arc Will Take Center Stage
If you’ve followed along with our coverage, you know how much we love Doc here.
While we still mourn the loss of our other beloved FOX medical drama, The Resident, there’s been a void that has been filled with Doc and its wonderful blend of exciting medical drama, warmth, and humanity in its storytelling.
And there’s no question it’s the most highly anticipated Fall premiere in a frustratingly thin and bleak incoming TV season.
But while there are so many things about this series that I’m most excited about, the sophomore season also has me anxious.
Can the series live up to all the heart, healing, and rich storytelling of the first season?
Will Doc be able to pull off its super-sized season? Will the addition of new characters, some incredibly high-profile (Hello, Felicity Huffman), detract from the characters we’ve already come to know and enjoy?
I’d like to think it’s like Back-to-school jitters, where your heart races with anticipation and wariness over the unknown. But the excitement? That never fades away.
And after FOX released that heart-racing Trailer, there’s even more of a reason to have us counting down the seconds.
But while the series left us with some questions and mixed feelings about that infamous love triangle, what stands out most from the Trailer is the simple fact that one of Amy’s most important storylines won’t just fade away.
At the center of this story isn’t just a woman who is getting a second chance at life, love, and her career. Naturally, many people have a deep investment in who Amy ends up romantically.
But at the core of Amy’s story has been how she navigates the world with eight years of her memory lost to her. It’s such a unique premise for a series to explore.
Essentially, Amy has three different versions of herself and lives that she and those around her are trying to navigate.
We have who Amy was before her son died, the woman she became during that loss, and this amnesiac version of Amy who is trying to make sense of these other versions of herself and fill in the blanks.
Memories are precious things that often shape so much of who we are, our experiences, and how we connect to people.
But memories are also terrifying. Our brains are capable of protecting us from our own memories of trauma, hurt, and pain to ensure that we function properly.
Grief may not be the only thing that shaped Amy into the hardened person that she became after her son died. There could be so much more to that particular story.
The Trailer teases the prospect of Amy taking the reins in her life after the first season saw her without any control and losing her grip.
We have her leading the charge in an experimental treatment plan that may push her to the absolute max mentally, physically, and emotionally in an effort to start piecing together the puzzles of her lost memories.
And while former foe turned possible ally (?), the mean nurse has rather apt line that many of us do wish we could forget the last eight years, it’s refreshing to see that Amy wants to take steps forward in reclaiming her memories.
Why? Because, as she says in the trailer, “without my memories, I’m trapped in time.” And that’s the most poignant way of describing where Amy is in her life right now.
She’s not fully in the present, and her past is a mishmash of memories and things that she lost.
While many people are excited about the love triangle, this aspect of Amy’s story is the most compelling and unique. How does one move forward when there’s so much about themselves that they don’t know?
And how much would and should a person risk to figure it all out and get answers? Amy is willing to take the risks, and it aligns with her trailblazing, risk-taking nature, a determination that often feels unmatched.
Because as badass as Amy is in the present right now, she feels like not knowing or having access to everything in the recesses of her mind is what’s holding her back in so many aspects of her life: as a doctor, mother, and romantic partner.
And that’s what makes her memory issues such a fantastic way of telling rich stories that expand into all aspects of her life. It’s all connected in the end, right?
If Amy can recall what she’s forgotten, it could allow her to continue practicing medicine in the way she desires, rather than always having her career on the line.
Her lost memories will help her understand where things went wrong with Katie and aid in their path toward rekindling and repairing their dynamic.
If she can recall the version of Amy that Jake fell in love with, then she can approach their relationship with her full heart, free from the hurt of still loving Michael.
Many shows would use something like Amy’s memory loss as the hook and gimmick to lure people into the series, and then they’d phase it out over time as they focus on other things.
Thankfully, Doc has no intentions of doing that. And in doing so, it’s this wonderful form of representation for Amy’s disability and what she has to endure to get through the day.
She may never reclaim everything, which is what’s so fascinating about the mind and its unknowns. But it doesn’t mean she can’t try to regain as much as possible.
And knowing that Amy will be doing this while still juggling her complex life makes her all the more interesting to watch and undeniably worth rooting for, too.
The teaser even gives us a payoff, too, by confirming that she’ll start having memory flashes, as bits and pieces slowly come to her over time.
It means that the series, which excelled at building up and unraveling a mystery, can manage to do the same in the sophomore season. There’s something within these memory flashes that’s pertinent to Amy and what she wants or needs to know.
It’s something the series can play around with for most of the season, and it’ll be an engaging throughline through the episodes.
We hear Amy saying that her brain is trying to warn her about something and that she needs to find out what happened before it’s too late. But there’s no way of knowing what that can be about?
However, we do get quick flashes of what she may be seeing, one of which has someone angrily slamming their hands on her desk and startling her, so whatever is going on? It’s likely big!
We know Amy is like a dog with a bone when she’s determined, and it likely will contribute to how she’s pushing herself too hard with treatments that have a new doctor, chief, and her former mentor, Joan, warning both her and Gina about it.
The trailer also shows Amy with a nosebleed, confirming that she really is wearing her body down with these treatments.
Doc’s trailer gives us our first look at Joan in action. While there were some initial reservations about Felicity Huffman joining the cast as a series regular and how this particular character, taking over a role that Amy still desires, could overshadow things, the trailer puts me at ease a bit.
While she initially sounded like she’d be adversarial, it’s clear that Joan genuinely does care about Amy and the job that they do. She’s not so much a conniving, plotting threat, but someone who will understandably feel compelled to rein Amy in.
I love Amy to bits, but I also welcome someone challenging her in an authoritative role. She goes rogue often, and it’s not interesting watching someone do whatever they please without someone offering some balance or consequence for the right reasons.
It won’t be all smooth sailing, but it’s the type of conflict that could be juicy. Amy is not out of the woods yet when it comes to staying at the hospital, and she’s subject to scrutiny and review like everyone else.
This means her fight to do what she loves isn’t over just because she spoke out to the board and Richard is gone. Amy, with a cause, is at her absolute best.
The trailer also teases the romantic messiness. Michael and his wife have their baby, and this is something that stirs up complicated feelings for both Amy and Katie.
Jake still looks like he’s in love with Amy but struggling, and Sonya is right there, waiting in the wings as usual, stirring up the pot and trying to take her shot.
We also catch a glimpse of the pair hugging, presumably after something traumatic happened, with him bandaged up, so goodness only knows what drama unfolds there.
And there’s a brief look at a man in the hospital with a gun, and TJ may sustain a GSW trying to take the man down.
We’re getting so much juicy drama, and I’m counting down the seconds until this profoundly captivating (a quote of ours that appears in the trailer) returns!
