“Don’t say ‘fuck the Empire'”: Disney gave just one note to ‘Andor’ creator Tony Gilroy

Spoilers for Rogue One and Andor ahead.
Andor creator Tony Gilroy revealed that Disney only asked for one change during the show’s entire run.
The American filmmaker co-wrote 2016 Star Wars movie Rogue One, as well as directing uncredited reshoots on the film. Andor is set before that story, focusing on the origins of Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), a thief who becomes a revolutionary and eventually joins The Rebellion, playing a vital part in Rogue One.
Speaking at ATX TV Festival in Austin, Texas (via Laughing Place), Gilroy reflected on the studio’s involvement, saying: “I never took a note”, before admitting there was one line they wanted him to change.
“We said ‘Fuck The Empire’ in the first season” he recalled “They said, ‘Can you please not do that?’” In the show, the line became “Fight the Empire,” and Disney didn’t offer any more notes.
At the talk, he also discussed his reluctance to spoon-feed elements of the plot to audiences, describing himself as having an “allergy to exposition”. “I’m trying to suggest the whole piece of the iceberg below the water” he said. “You should be able to feel it”.
He also expressed a desire for the show to be accessible for both Star Wars die-hards and newcomers. “I become really obsessed with my relationship—the script and the show—and just work’s relationship with the audience,” he explained. “You want to make it so that it’s audience-proof. That it can be watched in a number of ways”.
Those who have seen Rogue One will know Cassian Andor dies getting the plans for the Death Star to Princess Leia, and the creator didn’t shy away from that sense of foreboding. “This is a show where we all know where it ends” Gilroy said. “Everyone’s going to die… our mentality was that almost everyone’s going to die, and that’s broadcast everywhere in the show”.
Concluding with season two, Andor has been a success with both critics and audiences. It was nominated for five Emmys and a Golden Globe. NME’s five star review called it “the new high-water mark” for the franchise, saying: “Andor returns as a sequel to a prequel to a spin-off, but it’s by far the best Star Wars has been in years”.
