'Echo Valley' Review: Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney Can't Escape Ridiculous Twists

Echo Valley fancies itself an upmarket psychological thriller about addiction, and how the boundaries of a mother’s unconditional love can be pushed to moral and legal extremes. Its cast is led by Oscar winner Julianne Moore, who classes up any movie she appears in, along with a desperate, drug-addled Sydney Sweeney. Its screenplay is by Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby, and its sleek and precise visuals are filled with motifs and symbolism. All this finery, however, is merely cover for what Echo Valley ultimately turns out to be: a drama of questionable character logic where the plot twists and genre shifts don’t play like surprise gifts from a clever filmmaker, but rather ill-advised misdirects that send the movie into pulpier, less character-focused directions.
