Fictitious heavy metal icons Spinal Tap have joined forces with Sir Elton John for a new version of their classic track ‘Stonehenge’. Check it out below.

The re-recording comes ahead of the release of the Spinal Tap 2 film, which is a follow-up to the beloved 1984 mockumentary and cult classic This Is Spinal Tap. Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer, who play the hapless heavy metal trio, are all set to return for the sequel, which will also feature cameo appearances from Paul McCartney and Elton John.

Accompanying the film will be a new album from the band called ‘The End Continues’. It will be shared on September 12 via Interscope, coinciding with the film’s theatrical release.

On the 13-song tracklist are nine brand new songs and four reinvented favourites featuring additional guests Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood. Today (July 31), the band have shared the first preview of the album, dropping a reimagined version of ‘Stonehenge’ that features Sir Elton.

For the new recording, the Rocketman delivers his powerful, signature vocals to the mix, adding to the shredding guitars, thunderous drums and swirling synths. ‘Stonehenge’ is a vital part of the Spinal Tap lore, thanks to the section of the original film where the band ordered an 18-foot-tall version of the monument, but instead received a version that stood at just 18-inches.

They have gone on to play the original version of the song many times since, and Guest even appeared as his character Nigel Tufnel on the NatGeo Stonehenge: Decoded special in 2008 – sharing his theories about the megaliths.

The latest version of the song with Sir Elton also comes with a new music video, which features footage from the film. Check it out above, and pre-order ‘The End Continues’ album here.

The tracklist for ‘The End Continues’ is:

1. ‘Nigel’s Poem’
2. ‘Let’s Just Rock Again’
3. ‘Flower People’ with Elton John
4. ‘Brighton Rock’
5. ‘The Devil’s Just Not Getting Old’
6. ‘Cups and Cakes’ with Paul McCartney
7. ‘I Kissed a Girl’
8. ‘Angels’
9. ‘Big Bottom’ with Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood
10. ‘Judge and Jury’
11. ‘Rockin’ in the Urn’
12. ‘Blood to Let’
13. ‘Stonehenge’ with Elton John

A trailer was shared for the long-awaited film last week, and a synopsis said the upcoming movie “blends the same musical mayhem and satire that made the original a cult classic and features some fantastic rock cameos in the process.

“Will this concert be their triumphant return, or just another Stonehenge-sized catastrophe?”

The plot will follow the three members David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel, and Derek Smalls (McKean, Guest, and Shearer) as they come together one last time to play a reunion show. The gig comes years after the height of their success, with the band members having now assimilated back into everyday life, with one working as a cheesemonger and playing music only at a tiny local pub.

Documentarian Marty Di Bergi (Rob Reiner) is returning as well, and once again tries to capture his favourite metal gods as they contemplate mortality.

The sequel was first revealed in 2022, with Reiner at the time telling NME: “We never thought we would do a sequel. It was only because we started to talk to each other, and we came up with an idea we think might work.

“The bar is incredibly high. We debated whether or not we should do it… I said, ‘Look at us, we’re all in our 70s. How much time are we going to have [left] to have some fun?’”

The first preview of the film came earlier this month, when a first clip arrived, showing The Thick Of It star Chris Addison playing a music executive who advises the band that “at least one, but ideally two of you, would die” in an upcoming farewell concert.

In a separate promo teaser, Reiner’s character also attempts a group Zoom call with the band, which ends in disaster.
