Iron Man, Captain America and more are set to be recast following the release of Avengers: Secret Wars.

The news was shared by Marvel Studios chief, Kevin Feige, in a press discussion last Friday (July 18). In the conversation, he confirmed that after the studio has released Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027, they will recast a number of classic characters.

This includes an all-new range of X-Men who are coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in time for the new X-Men movie directed by Jake Schreier.

Many of the actors who starred in the X-Men movies across the past two decades will be returning for roles in Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to arrive next year. These include Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, and Rebecca Romijn.

Afterwards, numerous characters will be played by new actors – making a nod to the changes seen in the Marvel comics composition following the Secret Wars storyline in 2015. This saw various timelines converging and characters of the main timeline mixed up along the way (as per Variety).

Speaking about the move, Feige said: “We’re utilising that [story] not just to round out the stories we’ve been telling post-Endgame, just as importantly — and you can look at the at the Secret Wars comics for where that takes you — it very, very much sets us up for the future.

Endgame, literally, was about endings. Secret Wars is about beginnings.”

He added that Secret Wars will be more of a “reset” than a “reboot”. “Reboot is a scary word… Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we’re thinking along those lines,” he explained, adding: “X-Men is where that will happen next.”
It was around this point where Feige also suggested that other Marvel characters, including Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, would be recast too.

“Amy Pascal and David Heyman are now searching for a new James Bond,” Feige said, talking about the producers of Amazon MGM’s upcoming Bond film. “David [Corenswet], the new Superman — he was awesome. That will always be the case.”

“I think it’s hard for anybody to do that when an actor has done such a great role,” he said. “How are they going to ever replace Sean Connery [as Bond], right?”

Speaking about returning actors in the MCU, Feige hinted that  Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman may be headed back for more projects following last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine film. “I think there is more fun to be had with both of those characters,” he shared. “But we’ll see where.”

At time of writing, it isn’t yet clear who the new actors enlisted for roles in the MCU are, although further details are expected soon. Visit here to check out NME’s list of all of the Marvel movies (and Disney+ shows) in viewing chronology.
