Jeremy Renner teases Hawkeye’s MCU return

Jeremy Renner has hinted he may be returning to his role of Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in a new interview.

The Oscar nominated star has played Clint Barton aka Hawkeye since 2011’s Thor, appearing in five films in the franchise in total, as well as starring in the miniseries Hawkeye. In May, he claimed he would not be returning due to his salary being halved for season two of the show, but in a new interview with Empire, he appears to have changed his mind.

“I’m always happy to be in that world, man. … I love all those guys, I love the character,” he said of playing the character. “I’m sure we’ll end up doing season two, and do other things. And I’m happy to do it.”

Renner suffered a near-fatal snowplough accident in 2023, and the actor said his recovery has got to the point where he could return to a physically demanding role. “My body’s getting ready for something like that,” he said. “I don’t know if anybody wants to see me in tights, but my body will look good in the tights”.

He had previously rebuked the studio for their low offer for him to return. Speaking to the High Performance podcast in May, he recalled: “They asked me to do season two, and they offered me half the money. I’m like, ‘Well, it’s going to take me twice the amount of work for half the amount of money, and eight months of my time, essentially, to do it for half the amount’”.

He continued: “I’m like, ‘I’m sorry? Why? Did you think I’m only half the Jeremy because I got ran over? Maybe that’s why you want to pay me half of what I made on the first season’”. However, Renner was quick to disclaim that behind the decision was “not Marvel… not even really Disney. It’s just the penny pinchers, the accountants. I told them to go fly a kite. I mean, just at the at the insult offer. So, we didn’t see eye to eye on it”.

Jeremy Renner will next be seen in the Knives Out sequel Wake Up Dead Man, which was recently announced as the opening film for the 2025 London Film Festival. In January, he marked the second anniversary of his snowplough accident, writing: “I’m so sorry for all the haunting images I imprinted on you all”.
