Katy Perry reportedly fined £5,000 over “unauthorised” ‘Lifetimes’ video shoot

Katy Perry has reportedly been fined over £5,000 for filming one of her music videos in a protected area of Spain without permission.
The singer and her team shot footage for the music video of her song ‘Lifetimes’ in Ses Salines Natural Park on the Balearic Islands in July 2024.
Soon after scenes of them came to light, she faced some backlash from environmental campaigners who noticed that the filming took place on the protected area of land, the dune of S’Espalmador.
The dune is in a protected area, where to protect the sensitive habitats and wildlife, access is prohibited. The pop star and her team were then put under investigation over potential environmental damage caused during the “unauthorised” video shoot.
In a statement, the Balearic Islands’ Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment said that the production company behind the ‘Lifetimes’ visuals had failed to seek “authorisation from the Regional Ministry to carry out the filming”.
Shortly after, a spokesperson from Perry’s label, Capitol, responded by saying: “The local video production company assured us that all necessary permits for the video were secure. We have since learned that one permit was in process, although we were given verbal authority to go ahead. Our local crew on July 22 applied for a permit for this specific location with the Directorate-General For Coasts And Coastline.”
They continued: “Our crew received verbal approval on July 26 to proceed with the filming on July 27. We adhered to all regulations associated with filming in this area and have the utmost respect for this location and the officials tasked with protecting it.”
Now, it has been reported that the singer’s team have been issued a fine of €6,001 (£5,197), as per the Majorca Daily Bulletin, and the fee has already been paid.
Officials said that the fine was issued as the offence was “serious”, however, there will be no additional penalties as there is no evidence of any lasting damage to the site.
The song featured as a single on Perry’s latest album, ‘143’, which NME gave a two-star review to and described as “a serviceable but slightly dull collection on which Perry struggles to relocate her old sense of fun”.
Since its release, Perry has been embarking on her ‘Lifetimes Tour’, which has been making headlines for various reasons, including props malfunctioning, fans fainting on stage, and divided opinions over the choreography.
Before it kicked off, the pop star turned heads again and split fan opinions when she travelled to space to reveal the ‘Lifetimes’ tour setlist in April.
Perry will play the UK leg of the ‘Lifetimes’ tour in October. For those shows, she will follow in the footsteps of Coldplay, Enter Shikari and Sam Fender by donating £1 of every ticket to the Music Venue Trust – a government-backed scheme to help keep grassroots venues alive.
