Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 Episode 6 Delved Into Stabler’s Past, But Didn’t Move Forward On Its Most Important Story

Where the heck is the Joe, Jr. storyline?
Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 Episode 6 delivered a strong story, but seemed to have forgotten that it is more than halfway through the season.
With so little time remaining, the Stabler-centered procedural needs to focus on the mystery surrounding Joe’s disappearance, but it was conspicuously absent from the episode.
It’s Always Interesting To Delve Into Stabler’s Past, But We’re Running Out Of Time For Joe To Be Found
Don’t get me wrong — the case of the week was interesting.
I love it when people from Stabler’s past pop up, especially when they show how much he’s grown in comparison to them.
Detective McKenna would have fit in with Hank Voight’s team on Chicago PD. His desire for justice meant he had few, if any, boundaries he would cross.
That type of cop has become somewhat of a trope on Dick Wolf shows, but McKenna was more interesting than most because he was an effective mirror for Stabler.
It wasn’t that long ago that Stabler was that kind of cop too.
As recently as Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 1 Episode 1, he was letting his temper get the better of him and nearly sabotaging the investigation into Kathy’s death.
Still, Stabler drew the line at kidnapping family members to force someone to talk, as well he should.
If the cops act exactly like the organized crime families they are supposed to be busting, what’s the point of their investigations?
It was frustrating as hell that McKenna’s manipulations worked before Bell could fully put a stop to his bad behavior.
He needed to be put in his place, period.
Reyes’ announcement that they knew where Miguel was hiding interfered with Bell’s declaration that detectives in her squad room needed to play by her rules.
The bigger problem, of course, is that we now only have four episodes left, but are no closer to Stabler finding Joe, Jr than at the beginning of the season.
Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 should have focused more on Joe’s disappearance. Instead, it made it a side story despite a strong cliffhanger last season that still has not been resolved.
Another Subplot Was Also Missing — Isabella’s Whereabouts
Law & Order: Organized Crime appears to be better at creating jaw-dropping cliffhangers than at following through with resolving them.
Besides the lack of follow-up on Joe, Jr., there was none as to the strong cliffhanger at the end of Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 Episode 5.
As thrilling as Tamara Tunie’s guest spot was, she wasn’t there only to please long-time viewers.
The scene in the morgue revealed that the body had all its fingers intact, even though the bad guys had supposedly removed Isabella’s before supposedly killing her.
There was no mention of any of that on Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 Episode 6.
To be fair, the series will likely come back around to this — and there was a shot of a kidnapped person who might have been Isabella.
Still, it’s jarring to spend five episodes getting to know and care about a character, only for her to completely disappear after a huge reveal related to her death likely being fake.

Skipping this storyline in favor of a new case involving dead cops who had nothing to do with the Spezzano family makes the series feel disjointed.
This has been a problem when it comes to transitioning to a new case during Season 5. The transition from Bunny’s death to the Spezzano case was also too abrupt.
Despite The Dropped Storylines, Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 Episode 6 Had Plenty To Offer
There were several strong lines and scenes during the episode, even if I would have preferred more continuity.
I especially love what they’ve got going on with Bell this season.
Bell: You’re in my house, and there’s only one rule here.
One of the reasons I was annoyed that Bell’s confrontation with McKenna was cut short was that her attempt to put him in his place gave me chills, but they just as quickly evaporated.
Still, her disapproval of McKenna’s methods was one of the strongest parts of the hour.
I also liked Stabler needing to find out who was dirty and who wasn’t among his old friends.
McKenna claimed Tommy was killed because he was, but his own methods were questionable, making it unclear who had done what.
The Lack Of Stabler Family Scenes On Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 Episode 6 Underscored How Vital They Are
The only scene involving Stabler’s family was Stabler reaching out to Eli in the final minutes of the hour.
That scene was weird because the two hadn’t been on good terms at the end of the previous episode, yet now everything seemed fine between them.
The show lost something by not having any conflicts between Stabler and his family.
I especially missed Randall’s overprotectiveness getting on Stabler’s last nerve.
