MANTRA OF THE COSMOS

Noel Gallagher’s collaboration with the Mantra Of The Cosmos supergroup is now available to stream. Listen below.

News of the two acts coming together was shared at the start of the year, when it was confirmed that Shaun Ryder (Happy Mondays, Black Grape), drummer Zak Starkey (The Who, Oasis), guitarist Andy Bell (Oasis, Ride) and Bez (Happy Mondays, Black Grape) had hit the studio with Gallagher for a new single called ‘Domino Bones (Gets Dangerous)’.

Originally, the track was shared as a limited vinyl release and led to the band playing two shows at Liverpool’s storied Cavern Club – the venue where Zak’s dad, Ringo Starr, cut his teeth with The Beatles. Now, it has been made available on streaming platforms for the first time.

The single got its name from Bez’s first band, and is an intense blend of acid rock and psychedelia.

“I can’t wait to get this song out there and on the airwaves,” said Starkey. “The Cavern gigs were amazing, as was the reaction to the vinyl release. Working with people like Noel, Shaun, Andy and Bez is always a pleasure – these are the greatest musicians of their generation. We have more singles coming this year with some VERY special guests – this is the year of the Mantra!”

In an interview with The Times, Noel Gallagher added: “It’s Dylan, Dali, Ginsberg and a bit of cosmic jibber-jabber. Add in Bez, who dances on the tunes like Zak plays the drums and Andy Bell plays all things stringed, and you have it.”

Check out the video for the single below, which was filmed by Starkey using his four-year-old daughter’s toys, and edited by Nick Franco at 1185Films.

Mantra Of The Cosmos kicked off in 2023 with the debut singles ‘Gorilla Guerilla’ and ‘X (Wot You Sayin?)’. They also made their Glastonbury Festival debut that summer.

The connection between Starkey and Noel Gallagher goes back to 1995, when the latter dropped in to see the drummer rehearsing with his band Face. In 2004, Starkey joined Oasis and remained until 2009, playing on the albums ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’ and ‘Dig Out Your Soul’.

Speaking to NME in 2023, members of Mantra told us that they were ready to share new material, and had recorded “about 175” songs together. Ryder said: “We’ve got a lot of material. If you want some songs that can go on for two and a half or three minutes [laughs], then I reckon we’ve got about 175 songs, haven’t we?”

Earlier this year it was confirmed that Starkey would not be joining Oasis for their huge run of comeback shows.

In March, NME revealed the details of the full line-up for the Oasis reunion dates, confirming that it will be Joey Waronker behind the drumkit. He played in the backing band for Liam Gallagher and John Squire’s tour last year and is known for his work with Beck, R.E.M. and Elliott Smith.

Around that time, Starkey said he was “gutted” not to be a part of the huge reunion shows. “I texted them and said, ‘Why am I not in it?’,” he said in an appearance on BBC Breakfast. “If you get a new drummer, you get comfortable, don’t you? You get comfortable with new musicians and I think that’s what’s happened and I’m alright with that.”

He also emphasised that he still has great respect for Oasis, saying: “God, yeah, greatest rock and roll band of my generation. Greatest rock and roll singer of my generation.”

Last month, Andy Bell confirmed that he will be part of the line-up Oasis tour this summer, and the decision was made after he performed with the Gallagher brothers from 1999 until their break-up in 2009. He was then part of Liam‘s spin-off band Beady Eye.

He is expected to be joined by fellow Beady Eye alumnus and longtime collaborator Gem Archer – who was part of his recent solo album ‘Pinball Wanderer’ – and Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs on guitar.
