Mike Flanagan’s ‘The Exorcist’ film has been delayed: “No way it’s coming out next March”

Mike Flanagan’s take on The Exorcist is seemingly being delayed – find out more below.

In May last year, Blumhouse and Universal Pictures announced a new Exorcist film with beloved horror director Mike Flanagan – best known for his Netflix original dramas such as The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor – at the helm.

In June 2024, Universal Pictures shared that Flanagan’s “radical take” on the film would hit cinemas on March 13, 2026. However, in a new update direct from Flanagan, there’s “no way” the horror film will be able to make its scheduled launch.

Flanagan, who is currently working on an eight-episode adaptation of Carrie for Amazon Prime Video, revealed in an update on Tumblr that his Exorcist film hasn’t even entered production as he’s currently focused on Carrie.

When asked by a fan if the Exorcist film is still on track for a March release, Flanagan wrote back: “Production hasn’t started, we need to finish CARRIE first. No way it’s coming out next March. Nothing to worry about though.”

Universal and Blumhouse have yet to announce a new release date.

When the film was first announced, the director said the Exorcist franchise was “one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honour to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe.”

The new Exorcist movie will mark the fourth collaboration for Flanagan and Blumhouse; he previously wrote and directed 2013’s Oculus, 2016’s Hush and 2016’s Ouija: Origin of Evil.

Notably, Flanagan’s upcoming film will be an all-new story and not a sequel to 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, which was directed by David Gordon Green. Green had planned to make a trilogy of his own, with the sequel The Exorcist: Deceiver originally scheduled for a 2025 release, but left the franchise after Believer underperformed with critics.

2023’s The Exorcist: Believer scored a four-star review from NME‘s Alex Flood. Flood wrote: “Surprisingly, the best part of Green’s work isn’t even the horror. It’s the emotional story that weaves in and around the spooky bits… So all we’ll say is that it results in a truly heartbreaking sequence that will definitely make you cry. Yes, tears of sadness (really). This might not be what fans expect from an Exorcist movie, but they’ll be even more surprised that it’s actually watchable.”
