Rob McElhenney is legally changing his name to Rob Mac

Rob McElhenney has reportedly decided to officially change his legal name to the more simplified Rob Mac.

The actor, best known as Mac in It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia and for his role as the new co-owner of Wrexham AFC alongside Ryan Reynolds in Welcome To Wrexham, has made the appropriate legal filings to have his name officially changed.

Deadline report that one reason for McElhenney’s decision might be that his birth name has proved to be a challenge for audiences around the world to pronounce. In Welcome To Wrexham, McElhenney and Reynolds attempt to invest in football clubs in South America and they repeatedly struggle with the pronunciation.

His name also became the butt of a joke in an SNL sketch in 2023, in which Reynolds made quips alongside the It’s Always Sunny cast. “Pronouncing all those Ns and Es and Hs can perplex ‘em / So here’s a little birthday gift from all of your mates in Wrexham,” Reynolds sang.

McElhenney’s wife Kaitlin Olson added: “Mack instead of Mick / Then Henney does the trick / So get the name correct and show the man some damn respect”.

Elsewhere, McElhenney celebrated the Super Bowl win of his team the Philadelphia Eagles in February by sharing a tweet that referenced a memorable episode of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

McElhenney was recently interviewed by NME for the latest entry of Soundtrack Of My Life, in which he shared the songs that mean the most to him.

When asked about “the song I can’t get out of my head”, he responded with the Eagles’ anthem ‘Fly, Eagles, Fly’, a song that had been on loop for him in the lead-up to the Super Bowl.

He also listed songs by The Beatles, Bon Jovi, Rage Against The Machine and Johnny Cash as records that mean a lot to him.
