Sydney Sweeney heckled at film premiere: “Stop the ad, that is being racist!”

Sydney Sweeney was heckled at the premiere of her latest film, due to her involvement in the divisive American Eagle ad campaign.
Sweeney caused controversy recently by appearing in an ad for American Eagle jeans, revolving around the pun-based slogan “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans”, with one commercial showing the actor describing the effects of genes on the human body.
The commercial received some backlash, with many on social media quick to criticise the “jeans” and “genes” homophone, and suggest that pairing the actor – who has blue eyes and blonde hair – with the tagline makes it feel like it has racist undertones and is reminiscent of dog-whistling eugenics.
The Euphoria actor has been criticised online for her involvement, with Doja Cat and Lizzo both mocking the commercials. However, she has found an unlikely ally in US President Donald Trump, who said he “loved” the ad after he learned that Sweeney was a registered Republican voter.

On August 2, American Eagle gave a response to the campaign, insisting “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story”. The actor is yet to respond to the situation.
On Sunday night (August 3), Sweeney arrived at the premiere of her film Americana, in which she stars opposite Halsey, at the Desert 5 Spot in Hollywood. Once she left her car to enter the event, a heckler shouted “stop the ad! That is being racist!” The moment was captured on film, and posted by TMZ. The star did not respond to the criticism, and proceeded to pose for paparazzi pictures once inside the venue, smiling alongside her costars.
