The Boys Doesn’t Need to Live On With More Spinoffs like Vought Rising

To a lot of people’s dismay, The Boys is ending with Season 5, which recently wrapped up filming. 

But it’s clear that even though the show will be over soon, Prime Video is not letting go of the franchise any time soon.

The streamer already announced that Gen V Season 2 is premiering this fall, and recently, it also revealed a first look at the new spinoff titled Vought Rising. 

While I’m a huge fan of both The Boys and Gen V, I’m pretty skeptical about this upcoming show. 

Part of it might be that I’m not the biggest fan of Soldier Boy, whom the spinoff is centered around (sorry, Supernatural fans!).

The other part of it is that Gen V already expands the universe of The Boys plenty, and I’m just not sure that Vought Rising would add anything new. 

Gen V is Great, But Two Great Spinoffs Is Lightning in a Bottle

Even aside from its ties to the universe of The Boys, Gen V is an incredible show. 

It stands on its own, even with its connections to the larger universe, because the main characters of the show are fresh, original characters. 

However, for Vought Rising, the main character is a pre-existing character: Soldier Boy.

This might make the spinoff too reliant on referring back to The Boys or drive away potential watchers who might feel more pressured to watch both Gen V and The Boys to understand what’s going on. 

To be fair, Vought Rising’s premise of being a “murder mystery” is fairly interesting, but at the same time, expanding a show into an entirely new genre will be either a hit or a huge miss. 

Additionally, because Soldier Boy is such a fan favorite, I also worry that the new show will focus too much on fan service instead of spending time on the story. 

I’m going to try to keep an open mind with Vought Rising, but the case of multiple spin-offs from one show being equally as successful is a rare occurrence.

Then again, it’s a wonder that The Boys has achieved the mainstream success that it has received. 

The Boys Has Already Secured Its Legacy

As someone who’s been keeping up with the franchise since The Boys Season 2, I can definitely say that the latest season isn’t the show’s best work.

This is also why I’m concerned about Vought Rising; if the franchise spreads itself too thin, the quality across all shows might decrease.

I would much rather the franchise focus on one show at a time and make sure that they have given each one the time and energy it deserves to thrive. 

Three different shows from the same franchise across the span of six years definitely feels a little ambitious. 

Plus, people have already grown tired of the excessive number of superhero movies and shows from DC and Marvel.

The Boys doesn’t need to join the list of franchises people don’t want to hear about anymore. 

Considering creator Eric Kripke has agreed that now is the perfect time for The Boys to end, Prime Video should also recognize when it’s time to let the franchise come to an end.

After all, there are only so many stories that can hold the audience’s attention for a long time after The Boys comes to an end.
