Tom Cruise's 'Top Gun' Isn't Nearly as Good as Everyone Says

Tom Cruise was catapulted to superstardom with the role of hotshot fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the blockbuster 1986 action drama film Top Gun, which became the highest-grossing film of 1986. However, while Cruise’s incomparable screen presence unquestionably enlivens the film, its success is otherwise virtually entirely attributable to its spectacular aerial scenes, which completely expose and upstage the film’s tepid character and dialogue scenes. Quite simply, Top Gun generates real excitement with its flying scenes, but loses all momentum whenever someone speaks while standing on the ground.
