Sugababes have covered Lorde‘s recent comeback single ‘What Was That’ – check out the performance below.
The pop trio – comprising Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan and Siobhán Donaghy – recorded a session for the first-ever Radio 1 Anthems Live Lounge yesterday (May 15). They played their classic hit ‘Too Lost In You’, recent song ‘Jungle’, and paid homage to Lorde.
For their spin on the track, Sugababes performed alongside their live band. After a chugging electric guitar intro, the group’s trademark vocal harmonies blended in a cappella before the cover progressed with synth and drums.
Lorde’s ‘What Was That’ arrived last month as the first preview of the Kiwi pop star’s highly-anticipated fourth album, ‘Virgin’. Following on from 2021’s ‘Solar Power’, the record is due to arrive on June 27 via Republic (pre-order here).
Later this year, the singer will hit the road in the UK, Europe and North America for her ‘Ultrasound’ world tour. She recently told fans that the upcoming trek “could be our masterpiece”.
In a four-star review of ‘What Was That’, NME said that “Lorde is back dancing in the dark and on emotional, electric form”. It added: “Here’s hoping there’s more where this came from and that this summer really is a Lorde summer.”
Sugababes, meanwhile, released their latest single ‘Weeds’ last month. They are due to perform at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Liverpool next week, ahead of their biggest-ever UK and European tour.
During an interview with NME in March, the group talked about bouncing back as an independent act, writing “exciting” music with JADE, if fans can expect any deep cuts on their 2025 dates, a potential return to Glastonbury, and why they “hate the word ‘reunion’”.
