Why 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert' Was Really Canceled
The future of late-night shows is changing with one of the biggest talk shows on network television coming to an end. At the start of his show on Thursday, July 17, Stephen Colbert announced that CBS was ending The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in May 2026, which is when his contract will end. Amid boos from the crowd, he added that CBS will not be replacing him with another host but will instead end The Late Show entirely. Colbert also said that he had just learned about the cancellation the night before.
