Xbox and PlayStation won’t be getting ‘Dune: Awakening’ until 2026

'Dune: Awakening'

Dune: Awakening has had a hugely successful launch on PC, but Xbox and PlayStation owners will have to wait until 2026 to play.

Dune: Awakening is a multiplayer open-world action game from Funcom that’s set in an alternate reality to the Dune films and the books they were based on. The game launched on PC earlier this week and saw more than 140,000 players online concurrently (via SteamDB).

“In this unique but still familiar take on the iconic sci-fi universe of Dune, you begin as a prisoner sent to Arrakis to uncover the mystery of the Fremen’s disappearance. Following in the footsteps of the mysterious desert tribe, you will learn the true meaning of desert power as you rise from a nameless survivor to becoming an agent of the Atreides or the Harkonnen,” reads the official description of the game.

Dune Awakening also has a “very positive” review score, with fans praising the visuals, the gameplay and the narrative. “After watching the Dune movies, I needed something to let me dive deeper into that world and this game is scratching the itch in all the right places. Honestly, I was bracing myself after all the failed Game Of Thrones adaptations,” reads one review.

However developers have shared some bad news for console gamers. “While PC players can dive into Dune: Awakening today, Funcom has also confirmed that the game will be coming to PlayStation and Xbox. Console release is expected sometime in 2026,” reads a press release. No reason has been given for the delay.

Developers have also made it clear that the current launch of Dune: Awakening isn’t an Early Access test. “Dune: Awakening follows a classic business model: buy once and own it. Players can choose to purchase optional DLCs, but the game is not in Early Access, and it features no subscription fees or microtransactions.”

The first of four paid expansions is out now, with three more DLCs to be released over the next 12 months, via a Season Pass.

In other news MindsEye, the debut game from a celebrated Grand Theft Auto producer, has been dragged online after a disastrous launch.
