Nick Cave shares his own funny story about being mistaken for Nicolas Cage

Nick Cave has shared his own hilarious story about being mistaken for actor Nicolas Cage.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, actor Cage told the publication how he was mistaken for the musician Cave “almost every day”.
Now, Cave himself has responded on his Red Hand Files website, saying that the mix-ups between him and Cage “happen fairly often”. He added that he didn’t mind as he’s a fan of the actor: “Have you guys seen Mandy? My God. What a film.”
Cave went on to share a story of the time he was confused for Cage whilst living in São Paulo during the ’90s. He said that he once entered a bar and sat next to a young Brazilian man, who apparently appeared a little down. Upon striking up a conversation, Cave asked for the man’s name, who introduced himself as Diego.
However, before Diego could ask Cave his own name, he wrote the bartender reportedly leaned over and told him: “Dude, you’re talking to fucking Nick Cave!”. This caused the moody Diego to become “super-animated, jumping around on his stool, saying that he loved me, that he was my greatest fan, and so on and so forth”.
After chatting for a couple more hours and “getting completely pissed”, Diego admitted the reason for his mood was because his wife had kicked him out, claiming that she hated him because he was “stupid”. However, Diego told Cave “she fucking loves you”, adding that Peggy Sue Got Married was her favourite film.
Cave wrote he didn’t have the heart to correct him and ran with it – telling Diego about how Hollywood was a “cruel place”, how the Coen brothers were “masters of their craft” and “all this bullshit”.
Diego even tried to convince Cave to come home with him to convince his wife he was a good man. Cave said he dodged this by claiming he had to be on a movie set early in the morning, but wrote his wife a note saying: “Dear Ana, Diego is not stupid. He’s a good guy. Love, Nic Cage.”
This was enough to satisfy Diego, who then exited the bar after hugging and kissing Cave. The bartender then leant over and said to Cave: “His wife’s got a point”.
Cave has previously shared another story being mistaken for Cage on the Red Hand Files in 2022, saying he unexpectedly met the cult actor in Australia. Once visiting an animal sanctuary with his children in Victoria, Cave says he was confused for the actor whilst queueing to buy a didgeridoo for his kids.
Stopping by a pub on the way home, didgeridoo in hand, Cave says a security guard approached him and asked if he was Nick Cave. Upon confirmation, the guard apparently led him to a small private room, where actor Cage was sitting in a pork-pie hat, also holding a didgeridoo.
“Nicolas Cage shouts, ‘Only one letter separates us!’ and leaps from his seat and eagerly pumps my hand. I’m pretty confused by all of this, but say, ‘It’s an honour to meet you, Mr Cage. Have you just been to Healesville Sanctuary?’ and he shouts, ‘Yes!’ and I say, ‘Well, me too.’ So we exchange a few pleasantries, eventually part ways and I go back to the main bar to eat my lunch.”
In other news, Cave is coming towards the end of his first run of North American dates with The Bad Seeds since 2018, which have included the first live renditions of ‘Skeleton Tree’ in seven years alongside tracks from their acclaimed 2024 album ‘Wild God’.
