Anime adaptation of ‘Death Stranding’ in the works alongside feature film

Hideo Kojima has revealed that an anime adaptation of Death Stranding is in the works, alongside the previously-announced feature film.
Kojima confirmed he’d teamed up with A24 for an adaptation of his hit video game Death Stranding back in 2023. According to a press release, the film will dive into the mysteries surrounding the apocalypse known as Death Stranding, and explore the “nightmarish creatures” that were born into a “world on the brink of collapse”, rather than copying the narrative beats of the game. It’s due to launch at some point in 2027.
In a new interview with Vogue Japan (and translated by VGC), Kojima confirmed an anime adaptation is also being worked on.
“I am currently working with A24 on a live-action film adaptation of Death Stranding. When it comes to adapting games into visual media, there are works like The Last Of Us, which stays true to the original storyline, and films like The Super Mario Bros Movie which are more of a service to fans of the game.”
“While these works have their own merits, as a film enthusiast, I want to pursue the expressive potential of cinema,” he continued. “I aim to create a Death Stranding that can only be realised through film, one that could win awards at festivals like the Cannes Film Festival or the Venice Film Festival. In fact, we are also currently working on an anime adaptation.”
No further details about the anime Death Stranding project have been shared.
Kojima is currently gearing up for the launch of Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, which is set to be released June 26. In another interview, he said he could make “countless sequels” but would rather someone else take over the franchise.
Away from Death Stranding, Kojima is also developing a game with celebrated horror director Jordan Peele and has announced plans for action-espionage game Physint, but that won’t be released until at least 2030. “When I became sick during the pandemic, I realised that a lot of people wanted me to make something like Metal Gear. That’s when I had the idea for a new espionage game,” he said recently.
In other news, It looks like the long-awaited Star Wars: Battlefront 3 won’t be happening at EA, despite a fan-campaign to get it made.
