‘Annabelle’ writer to adapt cult horror game ‘The Medium’ into a movie

Bloober Team’s cult 2021 horror game The Medium is set to get a film adaptation courtesy of Annabelle’s writer, Gary Dauberman.

Set in post-communist Poland in the ‘90s The Medium follows Marianne, a psychic that helps troubled souls find peace. After being plagued by a recurring dream of a man shooting a young girl by a lake, she heads out to find answers with players able to explore both the physical world and the spirit realm in pursuit of the truth. As you might expect from a game inspired by Resident Evil and Silent Hill, things take a dark turn though.

The game was released in 2021 and currently has a “very positive” review score on Steam.

According to The Hollywood Reporter Gary Dauberman, the writer of 2017’s It, 2014’s Annabelle and 2019’s Annabelle Come Home, has secured the screen rights for The Medium and will produce the project alongside Coin Operated’s president Mia Maniscalco. Original developers Bloober will also be involved.

“With its compelling story and incredibly cinematic visuals, The Medium is a natural for a feature film adaptation,” said Dauberman in a statement. “When I talked to Piotr [Babieno, Bloober CEO] about it, we immediately connected on our mutual love of horror and his vision for where the genre is headed. I have no doubt anything Bloober develops is going to push horror forward in unique and terrifying ways, and I’m excited to be working alongside them.”

“Adapting games into films often involves balancing many interests, but with The Medium, I have a deep sense that Gary is the perfect partner for us,” said Babieno. “From our very first conversation, I felt we were completely in sync. And every conversation since has only reinforced that feeling.”

Bloober most recent project was the critically-acclaimed remake of Silent Hill 2 and they are gearing up to release new horror game Cronos: The New Dawn later this year. “We have started to stop feeling like underdogs all the time after Silent Hill,” game director Jacek Zięba told PC Gamer in a recent interview. “I think we’re riding the wave of people being intrigued, and we need to deliver. We know we need to deliver. We put our hearts into all our games, and we do whatever we can to make it the best.”

A film adaptation of Silent Hill 2 is due to hit cinemas in 2026 and Barbarian creator Zach Cregger is currently working on a “faithful” new Resident Evil reboot movie. He has warned gaming fans they may hate him for not sticking firmly to the source material though.

In other news, Hideo Kojima has hit out at “sad” blockbuster military games and claimed most AAA studios are playing things too safe. He’s also said he has no interest in playing the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 3 remake.
