David Lynch’s unmade Netflix script could be released as book

One of David Lynch’s former collaborators has said the director’s final unfinished project could be released as a book.

Known for visionary classics such as the TV show Twin Peaks, as well as films such as Dune and The Elephant Man; Lynch passed away at his daughter’s home in Los Angeles in January, after being evacuated during the city’s wild fires. He was 78.

Since his passing, there has been talk of an unfinished project he was working on for Netflix, believed to be titled Unrecorded Night. First mentioned in a tribute by Ted Sarandos, CEO for the streamer, it was later discussed by long-time Lynch producer Sabrina Sutherland, who called it “the best thing he ever did”.

On Tuesday (June 24), Variety talked to cinematographer Peter Deming, who worked on Lynch’s Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, and Twin Peaks: The Return, about the script for the project.

“I read it. It was very much the way he created the last Twin Peaks, where it was a ridiculously long feature film, close to 600 pages” he said. “It took me three sittings to read it, and we had some discussions about it. We went on one location scout, and David hired a production designer, and was talking to Laura (Dern) and Naomi (Watts) about parts in it, and then COVID happened. That’s the last we saw of that”.

It may, however, see the light of day on the printed page. “Now, just recently, I know Jennifer (Lynch) and the kids are talking about publishing it as a book, because I think it was a discussion that began when David started having health problems and whether he would be able to make it” he explained.

Last week (June 18), many rarities from David Lynch’s personal collection went under the hammer at auction, fetching a total of over $4.25Million (£3.15Million).
