Deftones announce new album ‘private music’ with monstrous single ‘my mind is a mountain’

Deftones have announced ‘private music’ and shared new single ‘my mind is a mountain’.
Fans have waited five years for a new album from the Sacramento band, and Thursday (July 10), the group announced that ‘private music’ is set to arrive on August 22 via Reprise/Warner Records. You can pre-order/pre-save here.
The official announcement follows the band’s huge headline show in London earlier this month, where they used their set at Crystal Palace Park to suggest that new music was on the horizon.
Previewed with lead single ‘my mind is a mountain’, the record comes co-produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters) – who also worked on 2010’s ‘Diamond Eyes’ and 2012’s ‘Koi No Yoka’) and was recorded across Malibu and Joshua Tree in California, as well as Nashville, Tennessee.
The same day the record drops, Deftones will kick off a leg of their North American tour dates in Vancouver, with their upcoming headline tour seeing them joined by Phantogram, IDLES and Barbarians of California on select dates.
The past two years have seen Chino Moreno and co steadily tease that a new record was on the way, marking the follow-up to 2020’s ‘Ohms’.
In September 2023, for instance, the band teased an upcoming full-length album and suggested that it was due to arrive in 2024, although this never materialised.
Then, in spring 2024, they then shared another update on their new LP and said that they were adding the final touches to the recording. “[We] have a whole record recorded all musically,” Moreno said. “And it’s pretty much my job right now to finish up the vocals… We’re not really in a rush. We want it to be great. I think that’s most important. But it is coming, and, yeah – it’s really good.”
Now, the band have officially shared the 11-song track list for ‘private music – which you can check out below – featuring songs like ‘metal dream’, ‘departing the body’ and ‘cXz’.
The tracklist for ‘private music’ is:
‘my mind is a mountain’
‘locked club’
‘ecdysis’
‘infinite’
‘source souvenir’
‘cXz’
‘i think about you all the time’
‘milk of the madonna’
‘cut hands’
‘~metal dream’
‘departing the body’
Late last year, guitarist Stephen Carpenter described their new material as sounding like “a continuation of ‘Ohms’ and ‘Koi [No Yokan’] (via Metal Injection).
The hints at ‘private music’ at their London show came just one day after Deftones were set to perform on the Other Stage at Glastonbury 2025, but were forced to pull out at the last minute due to sickness. Skepta was enlisted as a last-minute replacement.
