Disney's 'Star Wars' Rival 'The Black Hole' Remains a Dark Sci-Fi Gem
While Disney and Star Warshave now become synonymous with one another, thanks to the $4.05 billion purchase of Lucasfilm in October 2012, there was a period when the "House of Mouse" viewed the sci-fi epic as a competitor, or at the very least, a product to emulate. In 1977, Star Wars became a box office behemoth, marking a significant shift in the way people viewed the sci-fi blockbuster. Disney, mostly known for its animated works and kid-friendly live-action content, saw what Star Wars was accomplishing with a teenage audience and wanted a slice of those profits.
