Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'Total Recall' Is Still a Mind Trip
35 years ago, Paul Verhoeven's unique attempt at making a hard sci-fi movie was released. Total Recall starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, who by that time had already played Conan, Predator's Dutch, and the Terminator. In other words, he was already a big deal in Hollywood. After making the major comedy blockbuster Twins, Schwarzenegger eagerly pursued a return to action with a project he had been planning since the 1980s. Fortunately, after Schwarzenegger and Carolco Pictures hired Verhoeven, a director known for his action-heavy films, they were able to maintain the story's original tone while incorporating a major layer of thrilling action.
