Bandai Namco has confirmed an Elden Ring movie is in the works, with Alex Garland set to direct the film for A24.

An adaptation of Elden Ring has been rumoured ever since the hit video game launched in February 2022. Earlier today (May 23) publishers Bandai Namco and studio A24  announced the project is officially in the works.

“To bring the epic world and intense action of Elden Ring to film, the project will be led by filmmaker Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Civil War, Warfare) as writer and director. The film will be produced by Peter Rice alongside Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich from DNA, and George R. R. Martin and Vince Gerardis,” reads a press release.

“We’re truly excited to bring the world of Elden Ring to fans in a new form, outside the game. Stay tuned. The path ahead is only beginning.”

Earlier this month, a report claimed Garland would write and direct an Elden Ring adaption, but fans dismissed the rumours after the news story was swiftly taken down. ”I love how literally every gamer on Reddit is the most gullible person alive,” one fan wrote at the time.

No further details about release date, cast or plot have been shared.

Last year, Elden Ring creator Hidetaka Miyazaki said there was an “active” interest in an adaptation of the game, but only if he and the rest of FromSoftware weren’t too heavily involved. “I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation of Elden Ring, a movie for example. But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play,” he explained in an interview with The Guardian.

The same year Game Of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin, who helped with “a bit of worldbuilding” on Elden Ring, also hinted that an adaptation is in the works. “Oh, and about those rumours you may have heard about a feature film or television series based on ELDEN RING… I have nothing to say,” he wrote, unprompted, on this blog. “Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, what rumour.”

At the start of 2025 he went on to confirm that there is “some talk” about an Elden Ring movie but he might not be involved. “We’ll see if it comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement would be. I’m a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do.”

Elden Ring spin-off game Nightreign is due to launch next week (May 30). Acting solo or as a team of three, players will have to survive a long weekend in the open-world expanse of Limveld and defeat a number of imposing bosses.

In other news, Borderlands boss Randy Pitchford has been criticised for saying “real fans” will simply “find a way” to spend $80 on the new game.
