'House of Wax' Is Still an Underrated Horror Remake 20 Years Later

Horror movie remakes became all the rage in the 2000s, beginning with the success of 2003's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, which grossed $107 million worldwide on a budget of just $9.5 million. Soon enough, no horror title was off limits from the remake treatment, but what uniquely happened in 2005 was the reboot of 1953's House of Wax. The new take would mostly be a remake in name only, using the original as raw material to develop a new story that leaned into slasher movie territory. The result received negative reviews from critics, and the film's box office, while adequate, wasn't on the high end of the horror remakes of the time. However, in the years since its release, House of Wax has garnered a considerable cult following and respect from fans who appreciate it as a throwback to the slasher films of the past.
