Jason Momoa in talks to star in ‘Street Fighter’ movie

Jason Momoa is reportedly in talks to star in a movie adaptation of Street Fighter, alongside WWE wrestler Roman Reigns.

The original Street Fighter was released in 1986 and spawned a number of sequels and spin-offs, including 2023’s Street Fighter 6. In total, the hit fighting franchise has sold more than 55million games.

A film adaptation starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Kylie Minouge was released in 1994 and did well at the box office, but was slated by critics and gaming fans for not sticking to the source material. A reboot, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, followed in 2009.

In 2023, Legendary Pictures acquired the rights to make a new Street Fighter movie. No details about cast, writer, director or plot were shared at the time but Sony announced the film would be released on March 20, 2026. However, earlier this year the project was delayed indefinitely.

It’s now being reported by Deadline that Jason Momoa is in talks to star in the new Street Fighter film, with Bullet Train’s Andrew Koji, Warfare’s Noah Centineo and WWE wrestler Roman Reigns also being lined up for the project, which will be directed by Kitao Sakurai. No further details have been shared and studio reps declined Deadline’s request for comment.

Street Fighter won’t be Jason Momoa’s first time taking on a legendary video game franchise. Earlier this year, he played Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison in A Minecraft Movie. The adaptation didn’t go down well with critics but quickly became one of the biggest movies of the year, helped by a number of viral moments that split cinema audiences.

However Momoa later admitted that he didn’t allow his kids to play video games. “I want them to use their creativity in a different way,” he added.

As well as Street Fighter, Sony is currently working on live-action adaptations of Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn. The studio has also confirmed plans for a “faithful” Resident Evil movie and is involved in the live-action Legend Of Zelda film. 

In other news, Bandai Namco has confirmed an Elden Ring movie is in the works, with Alex Garland set to write and direct the film for A24.
