Jenna Ortega says young people “struggling” to find “sense of self” in social media age

Jenna Ortega has discussed the isolating effect of social media on young people while promoting her new show Wednesday.
The actor returns in the title role of the Addams Family spin-off series, which held its premiere in London last night (July 30). Speaking to the BBC, she spoke about the show’s themes of community, something she feels younger people struggle with due to their online existence.
“I wasn’t around in the ’70s, but I hear stories of people knocking on their neighbours’ doors and the bikes going all throughout the city, and just expecting to meet someone at a certain time on a certain location” she said, comparing it to the environment for young people today. “People don’t talk to each other in person. They’re interacting and finding their community online, which can be very isolating”.
She continued: “Also, there are so many voices and so many opinions that you’re exposed to, much more than you would typically be, or that humans are kind of meant to be exposed to. So, I think it’s harder to find a sense of self. Young people are struggling to find, ‘What makes my voice stand out? What is it about me in this world and this society today that gives me a sense of purpose or control or authority?'”
The actor, who also worked with Wednesday creator Tim Burton on last year’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, argued that this may be why people are so drawn to the Addams Family’s eccentricities. “There’s great comfort in seeing people who are so obviously themselves” she said, adding: “It’s very easy now to get swept up in some sort of sheep mentality, and I think it’s so important for young people to see this family now more than ever.”
Elsewhere, Tim Burton has revealed he is working on another project with Lady Gaga, who makes an appearance in Wednesday season two. He also shot down rumours that a third Beetlejuice film was in the works.
