Lucy Dacus “uncomfortable” with people treating her and Julien Bakers’ lives “like a Marvel Universe”

Lucy Dacus has spoken out about being “uncomfortable” with people treating her and Julien Bakers‘ lives “like a Marvel Universe”.
The singer recently confirmed she was dating her fellow Boygenius member Baker, telling The New Yorker that her recent album ‘Forever Is A Feeling‘ is partially inspired by their romance: “It’s been interesting, because I want to protect what is precious in my life, but also to be honest, and make art that’s true.”
Now, in a new interview with The Forty Five, Dacus has admitted that she tries “not to look” at the Internet’s reaction to her and Baker’s relationship, adding: “But friends have been sending me funny things. It’s a happy thing – and Julien is very pro me letting people know.”
She went on to add that “the album was a gift to [Baker] first”, sharing that she sent the song ‘Calliope’ to express her feelings for Baker: “I wrote that song genuinely, when it was like, ‘OK, feelings are on the table, and we ought not touch them, because our relationship is too important, and I support what you want for your life. And how great that you’ve told me! Or like, ‘Wow, what a surprise that we’re saying this out loud. But let’s ultimately just say that we matter to each other and move on.’ That was real. That’s how I felt.”
Telling the magazine that she often writes songs “so I can send them to people or so I can hear them myself”, Dacus said that “in a way, that’s the bit that makes me feel uncomfortable. The lore of it all – people treating our lives like a Marvel Universe.
“But then again, what is lore if not the story?,” she continued. “Some parts of my story I keep for myself but this is the story that defines my life. So what am I gonna do?”
We recently spoke to Julien Baker about her collaborative country album with Torres, along with its current popularity in the charts.
“We talk about this all the time, who’s allowed to make country music?” Baker told NME. “That’s a thing we encounter all the time, we’re gay people. It’s not like trying to prove someone’s legitimacy or saying it’s a trend. It’s just interesting that there’s a cultural shift happening where people are recognising the greatness of this genre.”
Meanwhile, Dacus is set to headline festival All Things Go this September. Alongside fellow headliners Doechii, Clairo, Djo, Remi Wolf, and The Marías, Dacus will join the likes of Rachel Chinouriri, Lola Young, The Last Dinner Party, Gigi Perez, Blondshell, Griff, The Aces, Paris Paloma and Sarah Kinsley for the New York festival.
