Miley Cyrus recalls first Grammy victory: “Once I saw Mariah Carey, I knew I was gonna win”

Miley Cyrus has reflected on her first Grammy victory, saying she “knew” she was going to win after spotting Mariah Carey at the event.
The singer made an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday (June 4) to talk about her new album, ‘Something Beautiful’, which was released last week.
At one point in the conversation, Cyrus looked back on winning Best Pop Solo Performance and Record Of The Year for her hit ‘Flowers’ at the Grammys 2024. She was presented with the first award by pop icon Carey.
“The reason I love that I’d never got a Grammy before was because it was never my compass, it was not my North Star,” Cyrus explained. “That wasn’t what I was after, because I didn’t really expect it.”
She remembered: “Once I saw Mariah Carey, I knew I was gonna win.”
Referring to Carey’s 1997 Grammy-nominated sixth album, ‘Butterfly’, the star continued: “I had this whole idea in my mind of the butterfly and that metamorphosis. And she is the butterfly. Her album ‘Butterfly’ has been such a North Star for me.
“So when I saw her, I kind of knew I was going to win. Because that was just… it was an MC. MC to MC; I knew I had to get it. I was so excited to meet Mariah Carey. Even if I didn’t get the trophy, which was very cool.”
Cyrus added: “I mean, I love the trophy. But it was really about meeting her. I was so excited.”
The singer said she was “genuinely surprised” to win her first Grammy, but almost didn’t “make it” to the ceremony. “I said it very quickly as I was mumbling my acceptance speech because I actually got stuck in the rain. I got stuck in traffic,” she told Fallon.

Back in February, Beyoncé and Cyrus won the Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performers for their collaborative song ‘II MOST WANTED’.
In a four-star review of ‘Something Beautiful’, NME said the project “does feel like a fully realised artistic statement”, adding: “This post-genre pop star has pulled off another pretty big swing.”
The record is accompanied by the Something Beautiful film, which will be screened in cinemas for one night only later this month. It was directed by Cyrus, Jacob Bixenman and Brendan Walter.
Cyrus recently revealed that Harrison Ford had talked her out of “performing in the forest” to promote the album.
In other news, the singer has told fans that her next LP will be “extremely experimental”. Meanwhile, fans have been speculating that Cyrus makes a dig at Dua Lipa on her new track ‘Every Girl You’ve Ever Loved’.
