The hype may have seemed unwarranted at first, as the original Mortal Kombat film mostly flew under the radar due to its simultaneous theatrical and HBO Max releases, which occurred during a time when the theatrical landscape was on shaky ground. However, that doesn't seem to have killed the momentum for the long-in-development sequel, as the first trailer for Mortal Kombat II has broken records online with the views it has received across social media.
