Actor Sam Claflin has confirmed he won’t be returning for the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie The Immortal Man, after online speculation about his involvement.

The British actor, known for his roles in the Hunger Games and Pirates Of The Caribbean franchises, joined the BBC drama in its fifth season. He played Oswald Mosley, a fictional version of the real-life politician who tried to lead a rise in fascism prior to the Second World War. He would become a nemesis for Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and set up the events of the climactic sixth season.

While that was said to be the last in the series, creator Stephen Knight announced at the 2022 National Television Awards that a film would be going into production. In June 2024, it was officially announced by Netflix, with production beginning later that year.

Murphy will return alongside new additions Barry Keoghan, Tim Roth and Rebecca Ferguson, with a release date yet to be announced. Despite his performance being lauded by critics and fans, Claflin recently revealed in an interview with Metro that he won’t be returning as Mosley.

“I don’t know that I should not say anything, and keep the speculation going” he joked, before confirming: “but no, sadly, I’ll share – I’m not in the film, though, I’m so excited as a fan of the series”. When asked about the production, he said: “I don’t know any details other than the casting and some of the people in it. I’m thoroughly excited”.

As to whether he would return to the character, he revealed: “The hope is that he is still alive. Well, I mean, Oswald Mosley lived until 84. He is still alive in the world, whether or not he’s a part of the world. I’ve heard rumours similar that (the film is) set in the future. I think Oswald Mosley kind of started losing light and his following during the war”.

In April, reports emerged that a new Peaky Blinders series would follow the movie, and would be set in the 1950s.
