Sarah Michelle Gellar has shared her hopes of reprising her Scream 2 role.

Back in February, Gellar confirmed that she would be returning to another former role, starring in a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. With that iconic role returning to screens, she has now told Entertainment Tonight she has hopes of returning to the Scream franchise ahead of the release of the seventh film.

She played Cici Cooper in the second instalment of the horror series, with her character being brutally murdered by Ghostface as she is thrown from the terrace of her sorority house.

Touching on her wish to return – either as Cici or a new character – Gellar said: “I’m not in [Scream 7]. I tried to get in [Scream 7], [but] nobody wanted me.

“They were bringing everybody back. I kept thinking I would get a call, I didn’t get a call. There’s a lot of people that died in all the Scream movies that are back. Skeet [Ulrich], [Matthew] Lillard. I’m just saying, I’m waiting for my call.”

It follows the director of the new I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot revealing that she tried “crazy shit” to get Gellar to return to the franchise.

Fans were vocal about wanting Gellar back in the film, which brings back original cast members Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt. However, her character Helen Shivers was quite clearly killed on screen during the original movies.

Earlier in the year, she confirmed to People that she would not be returning, but did say she had some input in the film. “My best friend (Jennifer Kaytin Robinson) is directing it, so we joke that I have an unofficial job, which is I am continuity,” she said. “So I’m always the one telling her, ‘Well, that would happen, or that wouldn’t happen with those characters,’ so I do have kind of an unofficial job title.”

Scream 7 is scheduled for release on February 27 2026, with Lillard joining franchise regulars Courtney Cox and Neve Campbell. Campbell did not appear in the previous instalment, Scream VI, having refused to return due to a pay dispute. Last year, she spoke about her relief that the studio “came back to me in a respectful way”.

Recently, another past character was reported to be returned – David Arquette’s Dewey, who will be joining the new film despite having been killed in 2022’s Scream.
