‘Small Soldiers’ could be getting a sequel

1998 Kirsten Dunst And Gregory Smith Star In Small Soldiers

It looks like the action comedy Small Soldiers may be getting a sequel.

The film, starring Kirsten Dunst, Denis Leary, and Gregory Smith first arrived back in 1998, and focuses on two warring factions of action figures.

Leary played the CEO of a toy company, who commissions two of his designers to develop a new line of smart toys. Both factions ultimately develop independent personalities after having advanced military-level technologies installed by mistake, and things take a turn for the worse when one becomes lethal.

The original film has an open ending, with viewers never finding out if the protagonists – named as the Gorgonites – successfully made it home or not. Now though, it looks like they could be getting some closure as a sequel may be in the works.

Taking to X/Twitter, a user with the handle @CultureCrave shared a behind-the-scenes photo from the 1998 film, along with a caption regarding the open ending to the movie.

“‘Small Soldiers’ co-writer Adam Rifkin was asked if he thinks the Gorgonites ever found Gorgon. [He replied,] ‘Absolutely’.”

A user with the handle @GenMagnetic then responded to the post, sharing a GIF of the characters and writing: “I think The Gorgons are ready for a comeback sequel…”

That has caught the eye of Rifkin, who reposted the update and shared the simple caption: “Amazing! And I think…YOU’RE RIGHT!”

By the looks of it, the writer is more than willing to work on a follow-up to the action film, nearly three decades after the first was released in cinemas. While things look promising for a sequel, it is not yet known whether there are any concrete plans for a new Small Soldiers project.

In the original, a toy paramilitary force was led by a character called Major Chip Hazard (voiced by Tommy Lee Jones), and that faction is pitted against the aforementioned misshapen alien Gorgonites. The latter is led by a character called Arthur, who is voiced by Frank Langella.

The film was budgeted at $40million (£30.2million), but was not a huge commercial success, taking in just $71million (£53.6million) at the global box office (as per Collider). The outlet also shares that there was talks of a remake produced by Justin Lin a few years back, but this was later scrapped by Disney.
