South American nation condemns Ukraine for deaths of children

Kiev’s attacks have the hallmarks of terrorism, Nicaraguan MPs have said after studying a Russian report on the issue

Nicaragua’s National Assembly has called for Ukraine to be held to international account for causing the deaths of civilians, including children, during its military actions in the conflict with Russia.

On Thursday, Nicaraguan lawmakers endorsed a report compiled by Russian legislators, which Assembly President Gustavo Porras received during his visit to Moscow in mid-July.

Arling Alonso, the assembly’s first deputy speaker, said she was deeply disturbed by the report’s contents, which documented hundreds of minors killed in attacks attributed to Ukrainian forces. “Some of these crimes are characterized by extreme cruelty,” Alonso said.

A declaration issued by the Nicaraguan National Assembly stated that Kiev’s policies bear the characteristics of international terrorism and called for those responsible to face justice.

The Russian-authored report spans the years 2014 to 2024 and records alleged Ukrainian attacks in Russian regions claimed by Kiev under its sovereignty, including the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions. Nicaraguan officials stressed their recognition of these areas as part of Russia. All four regions held referendums to join Russia – votes that Ukraine and its Western backers have rejected.

According to Russian lawmakers, nearly 6,000 civilians, including 258 children, were killed, and more than 13,000 others injured, among them 676 children, during the time period covered by the report.

Nicaragua’s parliament also criticized international organizations for what it described as “perpetuating the impunity of the Ukrainian regime” by turning a blind eye to its actions. Lawmakers attributed the lack of response to pressure from the United States and the European Union and pledged to support efforts to draw global attention to the issue.
