The war genre was conceived in 1898 during the Spanish-American War that began shortly after the sinking of the USS Maine. The American public eagerly wanted information about the first major international conflict the country was involved in, so numerous short "actualities" — documentary film clips with reenactments — were made. After that, the genre took off, with the first and second global wars providing plenty of ideas for filmmakers.
