The critics are raving about Nathan Fielder’s ‘The Rehearsal’ season two

The second season of Nathan Fielder’s surreal comedy series The Rehearsal is here, but what do the critics think? Find out below.
The HBO show sees Fielder help real people prepare for major moments in their lives by constructing entire rooms, houses and other settings in order to simulate every possible outcome.
The new season will premiere on HBO and Max on Sunday (April 20), with the network teasing that in the new episodes, “the urgency of Fielder’s project grows as he decides to put his resources toward an issue that affects us all.”
The reviews are in, and they are universally positive, with the new season sitting on a 100 per cent fresh rating on the reviews aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes at time of writing.
In a A-grade review, Indiewire noted that the season had convinced them that “it’s an earnest effort to improve people’s lives”, describing it as “a sidesplitting comedy and a moving emotional odyssey for Nathan” and “a cut above the vast majority of television”.
Variety were similarly glowing in their review and also point to Fielder’s own emotional involvement in the new episodes, writing: “Fielder continues to have a knack for finding extreme personalities happy to show their quirks on camera, but The Rehearsal remains a show about his own journey.”
It also gained an A from Consequence too, who said: “If season one was a mindfuck, stirring controversy and leaving viewers’ jaws on the floor, season two is a gut-punch; an artful knock-out blow that further defies all classification, expectation and logic.”
Another positive verdict came from Rolling Stone, although they did note: “It’s almost too massive for its own good, inviting you to marvel at the fact that Fielder did it at all, rather than find a comic idea within it.”
The Daily Beast also ruled the season to be a resounding success: “A marvel of philosophy, social science and art critique, all of which it delivers in the funniest package imaginable. Television doesn’t come more inventive, daring and amusingly absurd.”
Viewers in the UK will be able to stream the show on Amazon Prime Video, where season one is also currently available.
