‘The Last Of Us Part 3’ could still happen: “With the right idea, I’d totally jump at it”

Neil Druckmann has said The Last Of Us Part 3 could still happen, despite shutting down rumours of a sequel earlier this year.

Ever since The Last Of Us Part 2 was released in June 2020, fans have been asking for a third game.

Last year, Naughty Dog released a Making Of documentary for The Last Of Us Part 2 which saw Naughty Dog studio head and The Last Of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann confirm he had “concept” for a third game after years of struggling to come up with an exciting idea. “It does feel like there’s probably one more chapter to this story,” he added.

However in March, Druckmann said in an interview with Variety that fans shouldn’t bet on there being more The Last Of Us. “This could be it”.

He’s now reignited speculation about a new The Last Of Us game. Speaking on the Sacred Shapes podcast, Druckmann said: “​​While I am the caretaker of this franchise, it’s important to me that everything is high quality. I don’t just want to make a lot of it, I want to be very thoughtful about everything we make.”

“If we were ever to come back to it, I want to make sure that it’s a story worthy of The Last Of Us,” he continued. “And I love that world, I love these characters. With the right opportunity, the right idea, I would totally jump at it.”

Speaking about the possibility of a third game in 2023, Druckmann said: “Just because something is successful, people think we have to make a sequel. That’s not the case. If we can come up with a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love – just like the first and second game did – then we will tell that story. If we can’t come up with something, we have a very strong ending with Part 2 and that will be the end.”

Earlier this week, The Last Of Us showrunner Craig Mazin said the HBO adaptation would need four seasons to tell the complete story with some fans speculating that the extended run was designed to coincide with a third The Last Of Us game. However Druckmann has since confirmed the TV show won’t go beyond the second game.

Naughty Dog are currently working on new sci-fi IP Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and an unannounced game, that many people are hoping is a new Uncharted title. Neither projects currently have a release date.
