'The Rhythm' Review: Tackling Profound Issues with an Unflinching Perspective
The Rhythm tells an uplifting, faith-based story of a former felon's positive impact on a young Black hockey team. The film has a heavy-handed approach, obvious narrative issues, and can feel like an after-school special at times. But it's a searingly honest depiction of the struggles at-risk teens face in impoverished communities, where racism, drugs, violence, dangerous influences, the "school-to-prison pipeline" and the lack of a cohesive family structure are tragic pitfalls that many never escape. The Rhythm addresses these problems with positive answers through love, guidance, and the value of teamwork in sports.
