‘True Detective’ reunion in the works for Matthew McConaughey and Nic Pizzolatto in new Netflix TV series

A new series from Nic Pizzolatto is coming to Netflix, starring Matthew McConaughey and Cole Hauser.

As reported by Variety, Netflix beat competitors in the bidding war for the upcoming show, which will see McConaughey and Pizzolatto work together again following their time on HBO’s first season of True Detective.

McConaughey starred as the lead, Rust Cohle, in the hit show back in 2014 alongside Woody Harrelson, and took home the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series for the role. That season also won five Primetime Emmy Awards, a BAFTA for Best International Series, two Writers Guild of America Awards for Pizzolatto, and more.

Little is known about the plot of the forthcoming series, nor the character that McConaughey will play. It has been reported by The Hollywood Reporter however, that it will be produced by Skydance Sports, and includes Yellowstone’s Cole Hauser on the cast – with him and the Interstellar star playing brothers.

Aside from working on the first season of True Detective, McConaughey and Pizzolatto were also meant to rejoin forces on an FX project titled Redeemer, although that series never came to fruition (via Deadline). They are also reportedly working together on a film adaptation of Mickey Spillane’s and Max Allan Collins’ Mike Hammer book series.

More details about both the Mike Hammer film and the new Netflix series will be shared at a later date.

For Pizzolatto, his recent work has included Easy’s Waltz, which is his first movie as a writer and director. It is expected to premiere at TIFF next month.

For McConaughey, the Dallas Buyers Club star recently made his return to the screen after a six-year hiatus when he starred in the 2025 crime thriller, The Rivals of Amziah King.

He is now set to star in a disaster thriller called The Lost Bus – which features Superstore star America Ferrera and will arrive on Apple TV+ – and alongside former True Detective co-star Woody Harrelson in a new Apple TV+ comedy called Brothers.

As for True Detective, the original 2014 season, set in Louisiana, was followed by a second season set in California, with Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams leading the cast. Mahershala Ali took the reins on the third season, which took place in Arkansas, and the most recent season, True Detective: Night Country, followed the disappearance of eight men from a research facility in Alaska – starring Jodie Foster in the lead.

The Oscar winner would go on to pick up an Emmy for her performance, becoming the first actor in the series to win an award. Despite that success, she insisted the nature of the show meant she was “one and done”.

Last week, it was reported that Nicolas Cage is in talks to star in the fifth season of HBO crime anthology, which will be set in New York City and is expected to arrive in 2027.
