The film, which marks the Haim singer’s first since her acting debut in Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2021 film Licorice Pizza, just debuted at Cannes to a five-and-a-half-minute standing ovation.
The Mastermind, an art heist drama also starring Josh O’Connor is set during the Vietnam War and the beginning of the women’s liberation movement in America, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In a new teaser clip, O’Connor steals a statuette from a museum while Alana stays with their kids. Check it out below.
Haim is also set to star in The Drama alongside Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, and will also reunite with Paul Thomas Anderson on his next movie alongside lead stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn and Regina Hall.
Anderson has written the script and will produce with Sara Murphy and Adam Somner, both of whom worked with the director on Licorice Pizza.
Reviewing Licorice Pizza, NME awarded the 2021 movie four stars and wrote: “Casting two people who’ve never been in a movie before – let alone ever acted professionally – as your leads is a pretty spicy move, but Paul Thomas Anderson has been making spicy moves for decades now.
“Even younger than Licorice Pizza’s downright radiant Alana Haim (yes, that Alana Haim), when he broke through with his 1997 rollicking porno-comedy Boogie Nights, the somewhat more wholesome Licorice Pizza sees PTA and his reels of vintage 35mm film freewheeling through the very same glowing San Fernando Valley streets as stalked by Dirk Diggler and making fully-fledged stars out of both Haim and her dazzling co-star, Cooper Hoffman.”
As for Haim, in April the band confirmed their fourth album would be released on June 20 – and they’ll be going on the road throughout 2025 to play the new material live.
Ahead of a slot at Primavera Sound this summer, the trio will be playing a one-off gig at Margate’s Dreamland – their first UK appearance since they headlined All Points East festival in 2023. They’ll then return to the UK in October for a six-date arena tour.
HAIM are set to play:
JUNE
27 – Dreamland, Margate (as part of the Margate Summer Series)
OCTOBER
24 – Motorpoint Arena, Nottingham
25 – Utilita Arena, Cardiff
26 – Brighton Centre, Brighton
28 – The O2, London
30 – Co-Op Live, Manchester
31 – OVO Hydro, Glasgow
These shows will be the first full gigs HAIM have played in the UK since they celebrated the 10-year anniversary of debut album ‘Days Are Gone’ with an intimate show at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in August 2023.
‘I Quit’ is the follow-up to 2020’s ‘Women In Music Pt. 3’ and was produced by the band’s Danielle HAIM alongside Rostam Batmanglij. The record was announced on-stage at the first of two surprise shows at Los Angeles’ The Bellwether and will feature previously-released singles ‘Everybody’s Trying To Figure Me Out’, ‘Relationships’ and ‘Down To Be Wrong’.
Danielle said that writing ‘Everybody’s Trying To Figure Me Out’ got her through some “hard times” and it was written following a panic attack after getting home from tour. “Something about being alone with myself scared the shit out of me,” she explained in an Instagram post. “After a lot of reflecting I realised I’ve let a lot of people try and tell me how I should live my life, but I realised in making everyone else happy, I lost myself.”
“I wrote it as a way to believe in myself again and quit being scared to do what I want,” she added. “We felt [like releasing it] might be of some use to get our vibes right for this summer!”
