Who Will Step Up As The 118’s Captain In 9-1-1 Season 9?

When 9-1-1 returns this fall, the 118 will be looking for a new captain.
We don’t need to rehash the devastating circumstances that have gotten us to this point, as we all know by now what’s happened.
What we don’t know is what’s poised to come next.
At the end of 9-1-1 Season 8, Captain Gerrard was unfortunately brought back to lead the 118 in the aftermath of Bobby’s death, and it wasn’t a popular decision (especially among the 118 themselves).
But it was said upfront that Gerrard was a temporary fit, someone to fill the role while a new captain was put in place to do the unfathomable; follow Bobby Nash.
As we head into 9-1-1 Season 9, details about what’s to come are scarce, but it’s safe to assume that the hunt for a captain will be a heavy plot point early in the season.
9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 18 made the pretty blatant case that Chimney would be the natural choice.
As the longest tenured of the core four, Chimney stepped in to deliver a rousing speech after a long and arduous day on the job. He galvanized the team at their lowest point, reminding them of the strength and unity their firehouse has always embodied.
9-1-1 Season 9 Has Many Replacement Possibilities
But it has never been explicitly stated that Chimney would be the captain moving forward. In fact, Chimney was vehemently opposed to it when talking with Hen, who also wasn’t interested in stepping into the role.
Hen would always be my first choice, as her heart, experience, passion, and knowledge would make her the perfect captain, but the show refuses to embrace that idea entirely, and while I’ll always support Henrietta Wilson and what she feels is best for herself and her family, her ascension to the captaincy would have been very nice to see.
But unless the show pulls a fast one on us and has Hen reconsider, it doesn’t look like that will be in the cards.
So, is Chimney the frontrunner?
It certainly feels that way, though the show could do something unorthodox and give us another member of the 118 eager to step up, or bring an outsider into the mix.
An outsider seems like the least likely scenario, as 9-1-1 has never been eager to add brand-new main characters. And considering the importance of having a captain on this show, unless we’re getting a revolving door of them, it would need to be a main character.
I gave myself chills just typing that out, as the thought of some outsider coming in to replace THEE Bobby Nash does not feel right in any timeline.
So, assuming we’re not meant to get a brand-new character this season, that leaves the core four.
Eddie may want to become a captain one day, but considering the events of the previous season, in which he quit the LAFD and moved to El Paso, it seems too soon for him to jump into another significant career change.
Now, Buck’s someone who would likely have aspirations to be a captain one day as well, but again, it’s hard to imagine that now would be the time he’d be looking to make that kind of move.
The 118 is a Solid Unit
I do expect Buck and all of the 118 to step up in all the ways we know they’re capable of and then some, because that’s what the 118 has always been built upon.
As everyone looks to move forward in different ways and follow new pathways, the captaincy will be just one of the intriguing things to follow as the series kicks off in a few weeks.
It’s bittersweet, but it’s also an opportunity to show how these characters grow, adapt, push onwards, and ultimately honor Bobby’s legacy.
